Bike Baton Rouge is a grassroots, all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to:
Promoting bicycling and walking as transportation options in the greater Baton Rouge area
Making these modes of transportation as safe, convenient, and enjoyable as possible
Educating the public on the associated environmental, economic, and health-related benefits of biking and walking
Bike Baton Rouge works to make bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge and its surrounding areas safer, easier, and more enjoyable through advocacy, education, and action.
Bike Baton Rouge recognizes the numerous environmental, health (mental, physical and social) and financial benefits of regular walking and bicycling and believes that increasing numbers of citizens taking part in these activities will result in a better Baton Rouge for everyone.
Mark Martin, founder of Bike Baton Rouge
Bike Baton Rouge was originally founded in 2006 under the name Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (B.R.A.S.S.) by resident Mark E. Martin. Since its founding, we have led the effort to defend and promote pedestrian and bicycle access throughout the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and we have been at the forefront of nearly every infrastructure development in Baton Rouge.
Bike Baton Rouge’s recent accomplishments for bike advocacy include participation on the Mayor’s transition team as an advisor for multimodal transportation in the city of Baton Rouge, successful advocacy for a Complete Streets Policy to be adopted by the Baton Rouge Metro Council, and successful petitioning of the director of the Department of Public Works to include bicycle and pedestrian facilities on a road that was slated to be resurfaced.
Additionally, Bike Baton Rouge has improved rider safety with bicycle maintenance classes, bicycle safety workshops certified by the League of American Bicyclists, and a grant-funded program to supply police officers with bike lights to distribute to bicyclists riding without lights at night (800 sets purchased and distributed).
Furthermore, Bike Baton Rouge supports the broader community with food drives, service learning partnerships, participation in Better Block demonstrations, and social rides.
