Bike Light Giveaway Program

Every year Bike Baton Rouge promotes a week-long social media campaign that encourages people to share their 'regular' bicycling stories to help bust the myth that bicycling is dangerous. To learn more about this initiative, click here.

BREC Volunteer Support
Bike Baton Rouge members have volunteered to help with Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission (BREC) projects that make cycling and walking safer or more enjoyable. Examples include tree planting along the bike path at Ward's Creek Trail at Perkins Road Park, and clearing debris out of waterways near multiuse paths.

LSU Service Learning Partnership
In 2016, Bike Baton Rouge was invited to participate in an LSU English 2000 class: Biking in Baton Rouge, a Service Learning Course. Our President, Doug Moore, gave a guest lecture about the bicycling conditions in Baton Rouge, evaluated project proposals, and evaluated the final projects of the 20 participating students. We’ll be participating in another LSU Service Learning Course in 2019-2020, having to do with Geographical Information Systems, analyzing the street conditions around LSU’s main campus.

Better Block BR
In 2016, Bike Baton Rouge volunteers helped set up the Better Block BR installation at Perkins Road overpass, and hosted a bike ride from the installation to the Manship Theatre for a film screening of Spoke. The installation tested ideas for multi-modal transportation infrastructure and business access.

Cranksgiving
Starting in 2015, we have hosted an annual community bicycle scavenger hunt to collect non-perishable food for the Greater Baton Rouge food bank. In 2015, 20 participants donated 125 lbs food. In the years since, we’ve collected 1,000s of lbs of food and passed along hundreds of dollars of monetary donations!

Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival
In 2012 and 2013, Bike Baton Rouge organized the Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival events including: a bike ride with the mayor, better block event, safe routes to school bike rodeo, bike corral, art and craft exhibits, celebration, competitions, games, raffles, films.

Bike to Work Week
Since 2012, Bike Baton Rouge has structured a week of events around National Bike to Work Day that include social rides, advice for commuters, and discounts at local businesses.

International Police Mountain Bike Association Annual Conference
We worked with the Baton Rouge Police Department - Mountain Bike Division when they hosted the International Police Mountain Bike Association Annual Conference in 2007 and 2013.

Promotion of Social Rides
Bike Baton Rouge coordinates weekly social rides in Mid-City and special event rides. We also provide information about other social rides in the city on our calendar.

Bicycle Information at Public Events
Bike Baton Rouge hosts booths at public events to provide information, resources, and enthusiasm about bicycling in Baton Rouge. Events include the LSU Sustainability Expo in 2017.

Annual Mayor's Family Bike Day
Bike Baton Rouge has worked with the Holden administration to support the Annual Mayor's Family Bike Day, an event initiated as part of the Healthy BR initiative in 2006. Bike Baton Rouge provided route options for the Mayor's office in conjunction with the Baton Rouge Police Department. This ride brought people across the city together on a social ride through Baton Rouge to encourage cycling as a mode of transportation, socializing, and exercise.  The Mayor’s Family Bike Ride was held each year, as part of the Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative, and it was open to bicyclists of all ages free of charge. In 2013, the event folded into Family Fit Day, and then Family Fun Ride from 2006-2009 as part of Healthy BR . 

Bi-Monthly Meetings
We host meetings every-other month for members and interested community members to share progress on our projects, take suggestions on ways to promote our advocacy efforts, and enjoy each other's company. Meetings are on second Thursdays at 7pm at rotating locations. See our Facebook events page for information about our next meeting.

Dedication of New Bicycling and Walking Facilities
Bike Baton Rouge has participated in the dedication of new bicycling and walking facilities including Phase One and Two of the Mississippi River Levee Multi-use Path, the BREC Wards Creek Path project, Phase Two and Four of the Downtown Greenway Path (phases One and Three have not been constructed as yet), and the Capitol Heights realignment, among others.

Memorial Rides for Cyclists
We organize memorial rides for cyclists killed on local roads and participate in the annual Ride of Silence. We also sponsored the 2nd Annual Colin Goodier Memorial Ride commemorating bicyclists killed by motor vehicles in Baton Rouge and throughout Louisiana.

Film Screening
Bike Baton Rouge has hosted screenings of bicycle-themed films including: VEER, the Movie, Bicycle Dreams, and Reveal the Path, to raise awareness of bicycle culture and advocacy. We’ll be screening Motherload in March of 2019!

Mike Bitton Awards Ceremony
Bike Baton Rouge hosts an annual awards ceremony to honor community members who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to make Baton Rouge a better place to bike. The awards are named after Mike Bitton, a former LSU student who became a spokesperson and advocate for bicycle safety and awareness following a hit and run crash that left him with life-threatening injuries.
