Sunday, november 17th. City Park, Baton Rouge.
Last year, Baton Rouge held its 4th Cranksgiving. About seventy participants pedaled around Baton Rouge and donated a total of 400 pounds of food to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, as well as giving over $200 in cash donations!
Registration opens at 11:00am and closes at 11:45am. Cranksgiving 2019 rolls at NOON.
Cranksgiving started in New York City in 1999, and there are now nearly 80 independently organized events across the globe. The event has its roots in bike messenger alleycats, but there are no requirements other than "get food" and "do it on a bike". Participants register at the start location, and are given a shopping list and a selection of grocery stores to bike to in any order they choose. They bring their haul to the finish line - donated food items go directly to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
CRANKSGIVING 2019 :
What you'll need to bring:
A bicycle (duh)
A way to carry your groceries (basket, pannier, backpack, etc.)
Cash or a credit card (be prepared to spend about $20)
A bike lock and helmet is highly recommended
What you'll get :
A shopping list with five common grocery items
A map
A list of local stores
What you'll do :
Register with our AMAZING volunteers
Ride to each store (your choice of route)
Pick up one shopping list item per store
Return to City Park as quickly as possible with your shopping list completed
You shouldn't ride much more than twelve miles (ninety minutes) unless you take some 'scenic' routes...
There will also be a family friendly option - about five miles worth of riding.
After the ride :
Drop off your groceries
Get your grocery list checked and receive your official time
Catch your breath!
Hang out for a while at the after-party!
Receive awards (sure, there's an award for best time, but there's also worst time, biggest/smallest spender and more...)
After the after-party :
Bike Baton Rouge takes the donated food to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank
You tell your friends how much fun you had - and bring them with you next year
Cranksgiving is 100% free aside from what you spend on food - all of which is donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
