Podcasts

People are always in search of good podcasts. Podcasts are especially great for riding, as they’re not as loud as music so they won’t interfere with your hearing while you bike. There are no shortage of podcasts about bike riding as a sport, but what about bicycle advocacy? Those are a little harder to find. If you’re into bike advocacy (and you must be if you’re reading this), here are some great podcasts to check out:

Bike Nerds

This one covers a wide range of topics. For example, here are the last few episodes’ titles: Motivated and Making Change, 200 Years of Bicycle History, In the event of an Emergency…, Getting Real with Bike Share, Of Bikes-Fun-Culture-&-Cities.

Bike Here

Their theme is “a biking podcast inspiring you to leave the car at home.” This one is brand new so you can get all caught up in a hurry. Their last episode was about OurStreets, which Bike BR is partnering with.

Shift Up

This is a bike industry-focused podcast, which is “focused on hosting healthy conversation about building a better bike industry and getting more people on bikes.” This is a must-listen for those who work in the industry.

The War on Cars

Don’t get turned off by the name, which is satirical, poking fun at government officials and op-ed contributors who complain about the “war on cars” which doesn’t exist, but if it did, their side would definitely be winning. No, this is more about highlighting the absurdities of over-reliance on cars and the unhealthy aspects of car culture.

  • These next few aren’t exclusively about biking, but are about building cities and environments that are conducive to better bike riding conditions.

Strong Towns

Strong towns looks at city planning holistically, usually from a financially conservative point of view. It highlights efforts around the country of people making their towns…well…stronger, which more often than not, also includes making them better to bike in (not a coincidence.)

Talking Headways

From *Streetsblog, this podcast discusses street safety, public transit and other ways to make American cities’ transportation networks work for everyone, not just those who drive.

*Streetsblog once featured a report authored by Bike Baton Rouge. Check it out.

And hey, we know there are tons of podcasts out there now. So if there are some we missed and need to know about, tell us in the comments. Happy listening and happy riding! #yeahbike!
