Bike Baton Rouge Receives Grant Funding from New Belgium Brewery
Bike Baton Rouge received $750 in grant money from New Belgium Brewery to support the Light the Night program for Baton Rouge schools. This program distributes free bike lights and bicycle safety information to schools in Baton Rouge to promote safe cycling.

As part of the program, Bike Baton Rouge helps program advocates at schools start a Bike Club, organizes and leads a Bike Safety Day, and provides front and rear bike lights for participating students.
“We are very excited about these funds,” said Sarah Schramm of Bike Baton Rouge. “Promoting safe cycling in Baton Rouge, especially among children, is one of our top priorities. This program works with other efforts in the city to promote safe routes to public places.”
To date, 250 lights have been distributed to students at participating organizations.

Bike Baton Rouge board members Doug Moore, Tina Ufford, and Sarah Schramm met with Councilwoman Tara Wicker last week Wednesday, October 11 to discuss bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in Councilwoman Wicker’s District 10. District 10 covers an area from the Mississippi River to an eastern border of Plank Road, St. Rose Ave, and around the University Lakes, south to Gourrier Ave. It includes Southern University, Downtown, LSU and City Park.
Councilwoman Wicker and her husband recently have been cycling to some destinations in Baton Rouge and observed first-hand the challenges of navigating the streets by bicycle. Interested in improving conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians in her district, she accepted an invitation from Bike Baton Rouge Vice President Doug Moore to discuss ideas for improving bicycle connectivity in the city and take a 5-mile bike tour in her district.
Although the day was hot, spirits were high, as Bike Baton Rouge pointed out where roads were wide enough for bike lanes, challenges for cyclists who must navigate streets that don’t align, and where bike and pedestrian infrastructure does not connect.
After the ride, Councilwoman Wicker commented on how much safer she felt riding in a group and taking a lane of traffic compared to when only she is riding with only one other person on the edge of the street. Bike Baton Rouge members noted that it's a common misconception that bicyclists are required to ride as far to the right as possible, and that on streets too narrow to accommodate three feet of distance between a car and cyclist travelling the same direction, taking the lane is often the safest way to ride. Bike Baton Rouge left the councilwoman with a map that show where bike lanes exist, where they are under construction, and where they are feasible. The meeting ended with an agreement to continue pursuing improvements for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and to work with the city to install bike lanes where feasible.

Two weeks after joining Bike Baton Rouge on this bicycling tour, Councilwoman Wicker made this statement at the October 25 Metro Council meeting regarding the Baton Rouge Bike Share.
"One of the things we found on our tour was that Baton rouge does not have infrastructure necessary for people that choose biking as an option for their mode of transportation, and that's a shame. I should be able to bike my babies through Baton Rouge or go to my Aunt and Uncle's house without having to worry about if I'm going to die in the street.
So if we want to grow as a major city, we need to be able to grow up and look at how major cities are attracting people to their community, and how they're attracting younger people and retaining them. I do believe that having biking as a viable option - if you have infrastructure improvements in place to allow that to happen - is wise, and it's progressive, and it's necessary."

Bike Baton Rouge today announced the recipients of the annual Mike Bitton Awards that recognize community members who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to make Baton Rouge a better place to bike. The Mike Bitton Awards are named after former LSU student Mike Bitton, who became a spokesperson and advocate for bicycle safety and awareness following a hit and run crash on River Road that left Mike with life threatening injuries.

Bike Friendly Business - Radio Bar
Since it’s first day open several years ago, Radio Bar has welcomed its bike-riding customers with open arms, installing one of the largest bike racks at a private business in town. They have hosted fundraisers for cycling causes, including one for Bike Baton Rouge, which allowed us to raise money to publish our Economic Benefits Report.

While at DOTD, April was involved in everything related to bikes/pedestrians and Complete Streets. April worked tirelessly to change the culture of traffic engineering to one that values human life and mobility. She continues such work at CSRAS as the Complete Streets Lead of the MoveBR program.
Bike Friendly Elected Official - Tara Wicker
We don’t give this one out every year because, sadly, some years we simply don’t feel anyone has earned it. Not so this year. Councilwoman Wicker, an avid bike rider herself, has always been a steady ally in the fight for safer streets and more bike and pedestrian infrastructure. She was a main voice in helping to make BikeShare a reality in Baton Rouge and serves on the city/parish Complete Streets committee to this day.

Dr. George was a co-founder of the Sustainable Transportation Action Committee which helped to expertly show the potential and possibility of redesigning a portion of Florida Blvd, one of the most dangerous streets in the state, to where it works for all road users. Dr. George works with AARP and is unmatched in her quest to make roads safer in Baton Rouge so, as she so often puts it, “people can be safe to walk across the street.” Her passion for road safety, civic engagement and for an active lifestyle for senior citizens makes us proud to know her.

Bike Baton Rouge promotes spring bike safety with tips for motorists and bicyclists

Bike Baton Rouge, a local non-profit bicycle advocacy organization, today released a short list of bike safety tips which they hope will result in increased safety amongst bicyclists and motorists sharing the road. Spring sees greatly increased bicycling as the warmer weather and extended evening daylight hours allow for more people to bicycle after work or school.
The last two weeks have seen several bicyclists and pedestrians involved in motor vehicle crashes in Baton Rouge, particularly along Florida Boulevard - a road, that Bike Baton Rouge notes, has no bicycle or pedestrian facilities on a near eleven mile stretch between North 19th Street and the East Baton Rouge Parish border at the Amite river.
Louisiana ranks third in the nation for adult bicycling deaths after Delaware (second) and Florida (first) according to a 2015 study by the Center for Disease Control, but Torkkola says that Louisiana rankings will improve as both bicyclists and motorists become more accustomed to the increased numbers of people riding bicycles in the state.
“We wanted to keep things really simple with our safety tips to give maximum impact from a small and easily digestible amount of information.” said Mika Torkkola, Bike Baton Rouge President, “And we wanted to acknowledge that both bicyclists and motorists have the responsibility to avoid causing crashes on our roads.”

A local non-profit organization, Bike Baton Rouge, will next week be holding a social media campaign to help dispel the myth that bicycling in Baton Rouge can be difficult or dangerous.
"Too often, people only hear about bicycling when something bad happens." said Bike Baton Rouge President Mika Torkkola. "We're encouraging folks to help change that perception by letting the world know how fun, how relaxing, or even in many cases, how mundane your average bike ride in Baton Rouge can be."
During #mybikestory week, bicyclists can post stories, photos, and videos of their daily bike rides on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media outlets using the #mybikestory hashtag. Bike Baton Rouge hopes that by hearing more about the experiences of bicyclists in Baton Rouge, potential bicyclists will see that the benefits of bicycling in Baton Rouge greatly outweigh the risks, which are often exaggerated by social media.
The Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s 2016 City Stats Survey found that 39% of Baton Rouge residents surveyed would be interested in riding to work if conditions were safer, a number that has grown from surveys in previous years.
#mybikestory week runs from Monday, February 20th through Sunday, February 26th. Cranksgiving bike ride combines donation drive and scavenger hunt for a good cause.

Bike Baton Rouge, a local non-profit organization, is inviting the community to join them for the second annual Cranksgiving bike ride on November 20 at City Park. The event will benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and will include a special donation to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
“Cranksgiving is a really fun way to get involved and to do some good, and with the flood damage that the Food Bank received, there is no better time to do that,” said Mika Torkkola, Bike Baton Rouge president.
Last year’s Cranksgiving was the first in Baton Rouge, but the event has a long history with its origins in New York City in 1999. In 2015, eighty events were held around the country throughout November.
Cranksgiving participants need only to bring a bicycle, a lock, and about $20 to spend at five grocery stores around Baton Rouge. A map to those stores and a five item shopping list will be provided, and participants will have two hours to make their purchases and get back to City Park. An average participant will ride around ten miles.
A family friendly option of about five miles is also available, and is suitable for riders of all ages.
Registration for Cranksgiving is free and will be open between 1:00 pm and 1:45 pm. At 1:30pm, Bike Baton Rouge will be presenting the East Baton Rouge Police Department with a special donation of bike lights.
“We will donate 500 LED lights to the Baton Rouge Police Department for our continued commitment to help Light up the Night in Baton Rouge,” said Samantha Morgan, board member of Bike Baton Rouge. “We hope this program will continue to educate people about the importance of riding with lights at night, as well as get them in the hands of people who need them.”
On May 20, 2016, Bike Baton Rouge made its first donation of 100 lights to the Baton Rouge Police Department with the agreement that the agency would give the lights to anyone they see riding without lights rather than issuing a ticket. Riding a bike in Louisiana at night without lights is illegal.
Membership fees and private donations have helped pay for a total of 300 lights. But the donation at Cranksgiving will be the largest yet, thanks to a generous donation from a Bike Baton Rouge member and his employer, Exxon-Mobil.
“At ExxonMobil, safety is always our top value. We’re honored to support Bike Baton Rouge’s efforts to provide additional bike lights to the Baton Rouge Police Department,” explained ExxonMobil Public & Government Affairs Manager Stephanie Cargile. “This donation is the result of hours volunteered by our employees, matched with grants from the ExxonMobil Foundation.”
After Cranksgiving, Bike Baton Rouge will host a dinner and awards ceremony.
Prizes, provided by Bike Baton Rouge as well as local bike stores and restaurants, will be awarded across three categories of riders - Fast, Fun, and Family. While the fastest riders in each category will receive prizes, there will also be prizes for those who spend the most, the least, and those who are the slowest. Bike Baton Rouge says that Cranksgiving is “only a race if you want it to be.”

Sharon Weston Broome, Denise Marcelle, Greg LaFleur, Bodi White, and Darryl Gissel’s responses to a five question survey of Baton Rouge’s mayoral candidates facilitated by local bike advocacy organization Bike Baton Rouge were published on Friday morning on the Bike Baton Rouge website at bikebr.org/election2016.
The responses highlight each candidate’s position on bicycle infrastructure and safety in Baton Rouge as well as their previous involvement in improving bicycling conditions in Baton Rouge. Responses from eight metro council candidates were also included.
"As Baton Rouge's bicycle advocacy organization we felt it was our responsibility to make sure each candidate had the opportunity to communicate their position on bicycling issues to our members as well as the general public," said Mika Torkkola, president of Bike Baton Rouge. "And we think the responses do a great job in highlighting what each respondent will be willing to do to make Baton Rouge a better place to ride a bicycle."
Candidates were contacted starting October 6, 2016 via email and social media and had until October 20 to respond. Torkkola says that while not every candidate responded to their request, those who did offered genuine and thoughtful comments.
Those candidates who did not respond can still do so by contacting Bike Baton Rouge. Their answers will be added to the list once they are submitted.

Bike Baton Rouge, a local non-profit organization, is partnering with the Southern University Agricultural Research & Extension Center to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Bike Baton Rouge will be supporting the 10th Annual Pink Party with a Purpose with a ‘Pink Bike Ride’ at this year's event, which will be held on Friday November 4 at Southern University's main campus. Bike Baton Rouge will also donate $5 from each new membership which includes a pink Bike Baton Rouge T-shirt, and $3 from each individual T-shirt sale.
“Women respond better to treatment both when supported by community and when getting regular exercise," said Jessica Stroope, a Bike Baton Rouge member and volunteer who counts breast cancer survivors amongst both her friends and family. "Bicycling with friends is an ideal way to do that - residential streets and designated bike routes are the perfect way to explore our city, get some exercise, and deepen connections with friends."
Getting regular exercise can be tougher than it sounds - statistics from the League of American Bicyclists show that female bicyclists are less likely to choose to bike on roads without bicycle infrastructure, noting that on average, women will travel five minutes more than men to access a bicycle facility such as a bike lane or trail. Bike Baton Rouge hopes its recently released Baton Rouge Bike Map (bikebr.org/map) will be a quick and easy resource to find safe ways to get around Baton Rouge by bicycle.

PRESS RELEASE : Bike Baton Rouge launches Official Baton Rouge Bike Map

Local non-profit organization Bike Baton Rouge published its first Official Baton Rouge Bike Map, which hopes to make it easier for residents to get around the city by bicycle.
“We’re well aware that biking in Baton Rouge can be a little challenging, but it doesn’t have to be if you’re familiar with the right streets to ride on,” said Bike Baton Rouge President Mika Torkkola. “With the Official Baton Rouge Bike Map, the right streets are at your fingertips wherever you have an connection to the internet.”
Torkkola says the map is a labor of love from scores of Bike Baton Rouge members and volunteers, many of whom ride the routes on the map daily. The routes were selected primarily to be low traffic and low stress while connecting neighborhoods and other destinations to each other with a minimal distance.
According to Bike Baton Rouge, the online map will allow the group to swiftly respond to changing road and trail conditions, to suggest alternatives to blocked routes, and to add new routes as they appear. To stay on top of these changes, Bike Baton Rouge is encouraging members and non-members alike to submit any comments or suggestions to bikebatonrouge@gmail.com.
Bike Baton Rouge will have a table at BREC’s Extreme Green 5K and Sustainability Event on Saturday, Sept. 10, at which families and individuals can learn why bicycling is a more environmentally transportation option than any other. Contributors to the bike map will also be available to talk about the routes as well as answer any other bike-related questions for anyone who’s interested in making greener transportation choices.
“Every time somebody chooses to ride a bike instead of driving, everyone wins,” said Torkkola. “The person riding gets some exercise, gets to have a good time, and gets to be out interacting with their neighbors rather than staring at a dashboard - and everyone else gets to have one less car on the road, meaning less traffic, less pollution, and a better future for our city and our planet.”

Press Release - Bike Baton Rouge presents National Bike to Work Week (5/16 - 5/20)

Bike Baton Rouge will be offering assistance with route planning, safety advice, and group riding opportunities to Baton Rouge residents for Bike to Work Week which begins on Monday, May 16.
Bike to Work Week is a national event to encourage people to ride their bicycles to work and to learn more about the health and environmental benefits active commuting, such as bicycling, can provide.
"There's a myth that bicycling in Baton Rouge is hard or dangerous, but it doesn't have to be if you take a few steps to learn the best route - which is usually not the most direct. For someone driving a car, that might sound like a bad thing, but if you're riding a bike, it's just a few more minutes that you get to enjoy the bike ride!" said Mika Torkkola, of Bike Baton Rouge.
Torkkola added that anyone riding a bike to work (or anywhere) should follow the road rules at all times, including riding with (not against) traffic and using front and rear lights at night.
Bike to work week will culminate on Friday, May 20 with Bike to Work Day. Bike Baton Rouge will host several “Bike Trains,” including one leaving from Ingleside United Methodist Church at 7:15 a.m., stopping at City Park at 7:35 a.m., and arriving at LSU at 7:55 a.m.
Bicyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to join these bike trains which will have experienced local bike commuters leading the way and available to answer questions and offer advice on commuting by bicycle.
Bike Baton Rouge will be partnering with the Capital Heights Social Ride to put on the Bike to Work Week Hump Day Social Ride on Wednesday May 18. The ride will leave Ingleside United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The Capital Heights Social Ride occurs every second Wednesday and is a slow paced ride often referred to as a “party on two wheels.”
For Bike to Work Week, Bike Baton Rouge will also be rolling out the hashtag #mybikestory and encouraging Baton Rouge bicyclists to share stories of their daily rides.

National Bike to Work Day was first held in 1956 and was organized by the League of American Bicyclists. Bike to Work Week was originally known as Bike Week and originated in the UK in 1923. An average year-round bike commuter saves 1.3 tons of Carbon Dioxide emissions a year, and studies show that active transportation, such as riding a bike, is typically a more effective way to lose weight or improve overall health than going to the gym.

Bike Baton Rouge and around thirty local bicycling advocates celebrated the recipients of the Mike Bitton Awards on Wednesday evening at the Firehouse Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. The annual awards recognize community members who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to make Baton Rouge a better place to bike, and are named after former LSU student Mike Bitton, who became a spokesperson and advocate for bicycle safety and awareness following a hit and run crash on River Road that left Mike with life threatening injuries.
Beaux Jones, former president of Bike Baton Rouge and winner of the Mike Bitton Award, said “It is a great honor to be recognized by an organization that I love and respect so much. There is still so much to be done, but I hope that I helped to move our community closer to a safer, happier and healthier Baton Rouge‘’. Jones was awarded the Mike Bitton Award for his services to Bike Baton Rouge as well as bicycling and walking in both Baton Rouge and Louisiana.
Other recipients included David Cano of Iron Works Design LLC, who was awarded the Bike Friendly Business Award for his work with manufacturing and installing Bike Racks in Baton Rouge; Gilles Morin, of the City of Baton Rouge Planning Commission who received the Bike Friendly Ambassador Award for his long term support of bicycling projects in Baton Rouge; and Juan Cruz, of Cultural Dynamics, who received the Bike Friendly Professional Award for his work in supporting bicycling and walking projects amongst minorities and underrepresented communities, particularly with the Gardere Project.
Mark Martin, founder and outgoing president of Bike Baton Rouge, was cautious when asked about what he’ll do with his time, saying “I want to take it easy for a while and see how long it takes me to become antsy again.” When asked about his successes, Martin said ”I am happy to see more people riding now than there were 10 years ago. I can't say that anything I did had a direct affect on that but it's good to see.”
Martin’s successor, Mika Torkkola, will immediately take the helm of Bike Baton Rouge.
Bike Baton Rouge’s focus for May will be be Bike to School Day, on May 4th, Bike to Work Week on May 16th through May 20th, and Bike to Work Day on the May 20th. Award recipients will include David Cano of Iron Works Design LLC, who will be awarded the Bike Friendly Business Award for his work with manufacturing and installing Bike Racks in Baton Rouge; Gilles Morin, of the City of Baton Rouge Planning Commission who will receive the Bike Friendly Ambassador Award for his long term support of bicycling projects in Baton Rouge; Juan Cruz, of Cultural Dynamics, who will receive the Bike Friendly Professional Award for his work in supporting bicycling and walking projects amongst minorities and underrepresented communities, particularly with the Gardere Project; and finally Beaux Jones, former president of Bike Baton Rouge, who will be awarded the Mike Bitton Award for his services to Bike Baton Rouge as well as bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and beyond.
Kellen Gilbert, Bike Baton Rouge board member and organizer of the Awards ceremony said “We think it is important to recognize and celebrate the individuals and businesses who are dedicated to making Baton Rouge a better and safer community for all who people who ride bicycles, who walk and who run. The ceremony will honor those who go above and beyond for all of us.”
The award ceremony will take place at 7pm on Wednesday April 27th at the the Firehouse Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge (427 Laurel Street). Bike Baton Rouge members, non-members and the general public are invited to join Bike Baton Rouge and our award recipients for some fun, food and festivities.
